<image:title>Blog - Introducing: Ecoforensic - Fundamental to this new discipline and core to Ecoforensic are our paraecologists who are local community members who have been trained in biodiversity monitoring, water sampling and data analysis. Essentially, paraecologists can be seen as the ‘paramedics of the biodiversity and climate crises’. Our paraecologist approach blends scientific research and capacity-building with the invaluable local knowledge of paraecologists who have a deep understanding of their surroundings and its environmental, socio-cultural and spiritual significance. As Ecoforensic continues to support the defence of biodiversity hotspots under emerging Rights of Nature legislation, 2024 has been a year of building more robust legal cases and growing community involvement across our three partner communities in Ecuador (Notably, Ecuador became the first country to enshrine the Rights of Nature in its Constitution in 2008).</image:title>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - Introducing: Ecoforensic - In response to these global pressures, Ecoforensic exemplifies how local action can drive meaningful international change. Over 50 trained paraecologists from the three areas have been gathering essential ecological data, generating biospatial information and contributing to scientific papers and publications. Earlier this year, a study led by Prof Mika Peck, co-founder of Ecoforensic and Professor of Conservation Ecology at the University of Sussex, identified 16,000km² of highly biodiverse land in Ecuador that should be legally protected from mining. Using spatially explicit IUCN and other internationally renowned datasets (e.g. iNaturalist, eBird), our findings are staggering: some areas were home to anywhere between 344 and 1,184 species, far surpassing the total of 240 species living in the UK.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Introducing: Ecoforensic - Even more concerning is that our biospatial analyses revealed that as many as 153 species are at risk of extinction. Excitingly, in 2024, paraecologists also confirmed the existence of a Jaguar in the cloudforests of Junín - previously thought to be extinct from the area - using camera traps. To put that into perspective, the UK is home to 10 species at risk of extinction, highlighting our shared responsibility to act fast and just how critical it is to build strong Rights of Nature strategies for biodiversity hotspots. We are continuing to refine the biospatial analyses methodology and technique developed by Prof Mika Peck, as it holds great potential for being scaled up and shared as an independent resource with other RoN-focussed projects.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Introducing: Ecoforensic - From setting up microphones and conducting interviews to capturing expressive portraits, moving subjects, and natural landscapes, the workshops focussed on how to craft powerful narratives that speak for nature. Participants are also leveraging these tools to promote alternative livelihoods like eco-tourism and agroecological farming. We’re hoping to share some examples in the coming months, with plans to showcase the efforts of our “paraecologist-communication-teams” at the next COP. Closer to home, Prof Peck has been contributing to the "Ripple Effect" project led by Dr Lucila Newell and Dr Ellen Rotheray (University of Sussex), which assesses water pollution and biodiversity levels in the Upper River Medway through citizen science and eDNA methods, whilst building momentum for “Rights of Rivers“ legislation in the UK. <image:title>Blog - Reflecting on COP16 - What stood out most from doing this series, was being met by the strength, courage and resilience of these community leaders, to keep showing up in global policy making spaces despite how predatory, strenuous, alienating and exclusive they are. Whether it was their first or their tenth COP, people for whom 'biodiversity' simply means life, pull together colossal efforts and resources to make sure to bring their concerns as well as solutions to the table and to the international community.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The First Network Gathering - We were hosted by two professional facilitators, Mira Bangel and José Barco, who crafted a rich programme and helped the group to distil a clear set of collective aims. <image:title>Blog - The First Network Gathering - Our time in the woods was also enriched by the presence of the talented chef, Bogdan Theo who cooked up a storm using local, vegan ingredients. Each evening, we shared food around a long wooden table, continuing our conversations about the theories, and practicalities of the Rights of Nature. Bogdan knew that we would be spending the most part of each day in detailed conversations, grappling with big ideas and talking between disciplines. The opportunity to come together over food, with networkers pitching into the preparation processes, created a remarkable sense of unity and rhythm. The gathering offered an opportunity to get into the granular details of how the Rights of Nature could be recognised in the specific cultural and political landscape of the United Kingdom.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The First Network Gathering - One particularly memorable activity revolved around the ideas of telling stories. We were encouraged to find two people who we had not spent time with before and were sent walking in the woods with the simple task of describing an event, or moment, which had moved us to work in the field of the Rights of Nature. Also with us in the woods was Pietro Torrissi, a filmmaker who has been travelling the world to record the stories behind RoN initiatives and actions. Pietro records events in an impressively subtle manner and many attendees remarked that the occasional presence of the camera added a sense of poignancy to our conversations, reminding us that these discussions could have rippling effects in the word, into the future.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - A Meeting of Rivers in Cambridge - In late September 2024, grassroots activists representing rivers across the UK came together in the city of Cambridge. This event was the first of a series of workshops supported by an AHRC Curiosity Grant and the University of Southampton. Just a few of the river groups represented were, Friends of the River Dart, The River Don Project, Love Our Ouse and, the hosts, The Friends of the River Cam. The first day of the conference, the 19th September, was open to all interested members of the public, attracting local residents, students, and those whose work is beginning to venture toward the idea of rivers having rights. The day began with introductory presentations by members of the organising team, Neil Williams and Jéremie Gilbert. Together, they have a comprehensive rundown of some key legal and philosophical tenets of the Rights of Nature and the history of the movement.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - A Meeting of Rivers in Cambridge - Jéremie narrowed the lens, talking about the river rights movement in particular. He described the momentum it is building within and beyond the UK, citing the 2024 Confluence of European Water Bodies as an example of cross-border collaborations and knowledge sharing. Shortly after, representatives from the Friends of the River Cam gave a series of presentations on the state of their local river and the immense efforts that have been channelled towards its protection. Terry Macalister spoke about the River Cam as a victim of unrestrained growth and neglect. Wendy Blyth then gave a presentation about what she calls ‘River Shadow Politics’ and Monica Bijok Hone turned our focus onto the existing legislation and issues of enforcement.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - A Meeting of Rivers in Cambridge - The Declaration finishes with the words: ‘We pledge to act as guardians of the River Cam, we declare the rights of all rivers. We acknowledge especially the rights of the River Great Ouse, which the Cam meets at Ely and which carries the waters of the Cam to its estuary in the Wash.’ The walk finished at the Paradise Nature Reserve - a precious area of wet woodland surrounded by marsh and tucked behind a popular park called Lammas Land. The reserve is home to singing chiffchaffs, wrens and robins, and a whole host of rare insect life. Click here to learn more about the area and, if you find yourself in Cambridge, you could even take a look for yourself! Many conversations at the event were linked to the highly publicised crisis of sewage in British waters. For good reason, this has captured the attention of citizens everywhere, becoming a staple feature on social media feeds and news reporting. Feargal Sharkey, former vocalist for the Undertones and lifelong campaigner, has harnessed the country’s collective concern and is preparing for a huge march in London on the 26th October. Many members of the grassroots groups represented at this event in Cambridge plan on being present and envision the march as an essential moment to galvanise the protection of our rivers far into the future.</image:title>
